What Company do You work for?
This is usually the first question people ask me.
Let me ask you a question. What is the name of your company?
Well that’s the company I work for. Allow me to explain. Like anyone else, I work for the company that pays me.
If you are my client, you are paying premiums and I am receiving a portion of that as a commission.
Although the Insurance Company issues a cheque, I am not deluded into thinking they are paying us, because it is you who is truly employing and paying.
So I am working for you and my allegiance is to you, meaning I will always put your best interest first.
Here is an example of a broker not putting the client first:
A prospective client told me once she asked the broker if they could get orthodontic coverage for their small group. The broker said it wasn’t available. But it was available, and it costs about $12./mo per employee with a family only.
Why would the broker not want his client to have orthodontics? The obvious reason (obvious to me) is because in this case the broker’s firm had a huge pool with Manulife and the broker’s allegiance was tied to the profitability of the pool and not to the need of the client. He knew that for $12/mo there would likely be a $1500. claim. Their pool put the broker in the insurance business rather than the brokerage business, meaning the client was not first, but the pool was.
I can promise you that I will always put your best interest will always be first and foremost.
