How does employee benefit plan make you a mature employer?
Yes, an employee benefit plan will make you a mature employer.
Let me illustrate this with an experience I had while on a vacation. I took a cruise once out of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and as we boarded a big storm hit.
The captain booted it south to South America to escape the storm and after a few days we made our way back.
That decision was not made on the fly. It was made a long time ago in “what if” type meetings.
They were prepared for all types of contingencies because they are a mature company.
Let me ask you a few questions:
What do you do if an employee dies? Do you continue his salary or just cut him off? Do you have a company policy in place like the cruise line does?
What if his wife died or one of his kids? I know if it happened to me I would be in a daze and not even know when I am coming back, but I still need to make mortgage payments and buy food.
Maybe I would come back to work before I should because I need the money. That would put a lot of pressure on you and other staff too. How would you respond?
Making a decision at the time is not mature planning. For $1.00 per month you can simply say, Ron take a month or two off. Here is $5 or $10k.
What if an employee got disabled or he or a family member has cancer and runaway medical expenses. I have seen people spend $20k to $30k per year for cancer treatment.
What if there are out of country emergency medical expenses like being in a hospital in the United States or elsewhere, or huge dental expenses?
Many people simply cannot afford to get even the prescription drugs and dental expenses they and their families might have and the employee himself will often not get the antibiotics or chiropractic treatment he may need.
Thanks to a mature employer like you, these contingencies are taken care of. I am sure you agree that healthy and stress-free employees are more productive employees.
